Online Charity Auction in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support

By | July 27, 2015

Just a little intermission from the book promotions and reviews – I wanted to share something very close to my heart.

Back in May, I shared news of an online charity auction being organised by my friend Marie Judd in memory of her friend Claire Shepherd. Marie wrote a quite beautiful piece about her friendship with Claire, and why she decided to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support in her memory – it makes me cry every time I read it, and you can read it here

As you’ll read in my earlier post, Marie’s original plan was to raise £300 – through two auctions and some small sales here and there, she has now raised over £3,700 plus an additional amount from Gift Aid. And still she continues – with a third auction starting on Friday 31st July, she’s now hoping to push that total past £5,000.

There are around 75 “lots” donated by friends, businesses and a number of authors and publishers who have been happy to offer their support. I was delighted to contact my friends at Choc Lit on her behalf, and they were kind enough to donate eight of their wonderful books – Marie will be offering them in two lots.

Not to be outdone, I’m offering up my Kindle Fire – no longer used as I now have an iPad and Paperwhite.

I’m letting you know about this on Being Anne not only because I very much support her efforts on behalf of this wonderful charity in Claire’s memory, but also because there are a number of wonderful book related lots you might directly appeal to you. You’ll find more detail on the auction’s Facebook page, but I do know there are signed books from Fionnuala Kearney, CL Taylor, Sarah Winman, Gill Paul, Melissa Bailey, Claire Fuller and several others, and a couple of techbeds for your iPad or kindle. There are also some really lovely craft and other items – even some boxer shorts!

Because of the number of items, Marie will split the items into 3 batches. The first batch of  25 items will be listed Friday 31st July lunchtime and will run until noon on Sunday 2nd August.  The second batch will be listed on Sunday evening and will run until 7pm Tuesday 4th August: the third batch will run from lunchtime Wednesday 5th August until Friday 7th August at 7pm. Winners will be announced on the Facebook page, and payment (other than any postage costs) will be made direct to Marie’s Just Giving page.

Please pay Marie’s auction pages on Facebook a visit – as well as supporting this wonderful charity, you will have the opportunity to bid on some lovely book-related and other items.  Thank you!

Every small donation counts – if you’d like to contribute a small amount rather than bidding on an auction lot, please visit Marie’s Just Giving page.

Anne, I just saw this. Will be popping over. With my partner's recent diagnosis (prognosis excellent, btw), It's something close to my heart – and definitely worth Just Giving a little to. Best of luck, Marie. 🙂 xx

Close to my heart too Sheryl, for similar reasons – Macmillan nurses, the most wonderful people, kept my head above water when my partner was fighting his. Thank you, and much love xx
